Chapter 28: Father and Son

"Don't bring a notebook," Barrett said again, staring at the screen.

"He's been planning that line all night," I said.

"He's going to make me bait hooks for four hours and not say anything."

"Probably."

He lay back down and put his arm over his eyes.

"I'm going," he said.

"I know you are."

On Thursday I was at the Cape May harbor at five-thirty anyway.

My father's old captain was selling to me again, fifteen pounds on Thursdays, and he'd texted "Come early. Something to see."

What there was to see was Glenn.

He was standing in a rented skiff at the fuel dock in a life jacket over a Phillies sweatshirt.

He was holding a fishing rod.

Barrett was untying the lines.

They didn't see me.

I watched them putter out past the jetty into the gray, the little outboard coughing.

"Four hours," the captain said beside me. "I give them two before somebody falls in."

At ten-fifteen, my phone buzzed on the pass at Low Tide.

Glenn, in the family group chat.

"Hattie. Dock. Now. We have FISH."
