Chapter 20: The Gate
"Then I won't," I said. "Have a safe drive, Mr. Coe."
He looked at me for a second too long.
Then he took the thing in my mother's coat back up to the tower to wait out the day.
Neil found me on the porch ten minutes later.
Travis came out behind him with his arm in the sling.
"The gate's electric," Neil said, before I could open my mouth. "It runs off the pole by the road. I've been looking at that pole since November."
"And the chain?"
Travis took a small brass key out of his pocket and held it up.
"Grandpa keeps it on the board in the tower," he said. "Kept."
"Can a man climb that wall?"
"It's eight feet of fieldstone with iron spikes on top," Travis said. "He built it in 1899 to keep the town out."
I looked down the long drive into the trees, a mile of it, to where the gate was.
"Then we let them go," I said.
At two that afternoon Neil drove his line truck down the drive.
He came back on foot an hour later with mud to his knees.
He didn't say anything, and that was how I knew it was done.
