Chapter 15: Heath's Office
I drove to Chicago the next morning, and Deirdre did not come.
"Somebody has to keep the lights on," she said at the SUV door.
"Come with me."
"The court is open, Jasper. It's been open every day for four years."
She straightened my collar, which did not need it.
"Go finish it. Then tell me what you want."
I kissed her once, hard, in front of the regulars on the porch.
Nobody looked away.
Heath's office was on the fourteenth floor, with a view of a parking lot.
He met me at the elevator and almost knocked me over.
"You look terrible," he said. "You look great. Don't ever do that again."
"I'm fine."
"I put her in the conference room. She's been sitting there since seven."
"Did you offer her water?"
"I offered her a subpoena."
Sabine sat at the long table with her hands folded.
She wore the same white shirt as at the motel.
Her hair was coming loose from its pins.
She stood up when I came in.
"Sit down," I said.
She sat.
I stayed on my feet at the end of the table.
"I read it," I said.
"I know."
"I'm not here about the envelope. I'm here for one answer."
"Ask me."
"Three years ago my father was dying in a county ambulance. You were the only surgeon who could have operated. You told me the rule was the rule."
"Yes."
"Why?"
She looked at Heath.
"He stays," I said.
Heath shut the door and leaned against it with his arms crossed.
"I had just been made attending," Sabine said. "Tobin came into my office that afternoon. He said the board would audit every case I touched if I broke the outside-surgery rule."
