Chapter 6: Alarm Off

Tobin stood above me in his mask, and my whole body went rigid.

"I want a different nurse."

I tried to sit up, and the surgeon pressed me back down.

"Stop fighting me. Tobin Ellerbee is the best charge nurse in this hospital. Surgeons put in requests to get him. You're lucky he came in on his own time."

"I don't want him."

I opened my mouth to argue again.

The anesthesiologist was already beside me.

"Relax. Count backward from ten."

Cold liquid slid into my arm and the room blurred at the edges.

The last thing I saw was Tobin under the white lights, looking down at me with no expression at all.

Then I was gone.

Pain dragged me up out of the dark.

It sat low in my belly and twisted, and every breath pulled at the stitches.

I forced my eyes open.

The recovery room was empty except for Tobin, who stood at the counter writing in my chart.

"I don't feel right," I said.

He walked over, gave me a calm glance, and said, "That's normal. Everyone feels like that after surgery. Rest."

He went back to the counter.

The cramps got worse.

Breathing became work.

The monitor above my head began to shriek.

I dragged my hand up.

"Nurse."

He glanced over, unbothered.

I saw his hand reach for the monitor.

The shriek stopped.

I did not know then what he had pressed.

"Don't panic," he said. "You're weak from the procedure. I'll keep an eye on you."
