Chapter 13: A Million Dollars
The man with the briefcase answered.
"One million dollars."
"A quarter paid in advance, and the rest on delivery."
"One million," I said.
My own number.
Clinton had only been four hundred thousand.
I turned to Tristan, and I did not decide to do it.
My hand was already moving.
The slap cracked across the tarmac.
His head turned with it.
He didn't lift a hand to his cheek.
He looked back at me, with my fingers printed red across his face, and said nothing at all.
"Nothing to say?" I said.
"No."
"Not one thing?"
"Not one that you can use yet." His voice was rough. "You can hit me again if it helps."
"It doesn't."
My palm stung.
It was the only part of me I could feel.
"Your Highness," my father said, delighted, "this is a family matter. Perhaps we could step aside and sort out the wire."
"Gordon," my mother said. "Shut up."
For once he did.
I walked past all of them to the airplane stairs.
