Chapter 14: The Test

I did not believe him, so I made him prove it my way.

The driver pulled the town car up beside us at the gate, and I told him to keep driving.

Not to Halvern.

To a place I would choose.

I picked a genetics clinic from a sign on Front Street, three blocks from the diner where I had worked for four years.

I had walked past it a hundred times and never gone in.

Tristan sat in the front passenger seat with his wet shirt stuck to his back.

I sat in the rear with Eli's head against my arm.

Nobody spoke the whole way.

The clinic was a low brick building with a woman at the front desk who looked at my bare feet.

"I need a paternity test," I said. "A rush one. Three people."

"Our rush is four hours, ma'am."

"Then I'll wait four hours."

Behind me, the aide set a black case on her counter and opened it.

Inside lay a sealed tube in a foam cradle, with a hospital label and two handwritten signatures.

"A blood sample from His Majesty," the aide said. "Drawn by the royal physician, sealed in front of a notary. Flown here in my lap."
