Chapter 17: The Cellar
Nolan went up the front walk without hurrying.
The house was three stories of old brick with green shutters, and every window facing the street was dark except the one.
The light on the second floor stayed lit.
Nobody came to the curtain.
He tried the alarm panel in the vestibule and typed the second line from Dutch's arm.
It chirped and went green.
Inside, the house smelled of lemon polish and old cigars.
A grandfather clock ticked in the hall.
Portraits hung along the stair, Brantleys in oils, every one of them with the same fixed smile.
Nolan found the door under the stairs and went down.
The cellar was cool and dry, with brick arches and racks of wine to the ceiling.
Burgundy was in the third aisle.
He moved a row of bottles aside.
