Chapter 23: Sable Key Vows

When the last coat was gone, Lorna switched off the main lights and left the little ones burning.

She stopped at the foot of the iron stair with her bag on her shoulder.

"I'll lock the front," she said.

"You three are not to leave this building until you've done something that makes the neighbors complain."

She went out, and the door clicked behind her.

The hall was very quiet.

Ten thousand small lights hung over the brick, and the dais stood at the back with the high leather chair on it.

Skye walked up the three steps and sat down.

She arranged the long black dress around her knees.

She looked at the two men standing below her in the amber dark.

She had never looked more like the person who had built all of it.

"Ford," she said.

"Floor."

Ford knelt.

He did it so easily it hurt to watch, one knee and then the other on the dark boards.

His hands lay loose on his thighs and his glasses caught the light.

"Nolan.

"Come here.

"Behind the chair."

Nolan went around the leather and stood at her shoulder.

She tipped her head back against his stomach and looked up at him upside down.

"Take my braid."

He took it in his fist.

It was warm and heavy, and sun-bleached in the lamplight.

"Pull," she said.

He pulled, gently, and her throat arched.

"Harder."

He did.

Her mouth fell open.
