Chapter 10: Terms

Leanne drove me back to Hank's in her small gray car.

She kept both hands on the wheel and her eyes on the road.

I let the silence run until the second red light.

"What did my mother mean?"

"Not yet."

"What did you say on that phone?"

"Connor, not yet." Her voice shook once and steadied. "Saturday is the memorial. After that I'll tell you everything, and you can throw me out of your life with a clear conscience."

"Why Saturday?"

"Because I want you standing up straight when you hear it."

I turned to the window.

The light changed and we moved.

"Then here are my terms," I said. "I take my pills, every one, and you hand them to me. Nothing else. No tea, no blankets, no sitting up with me. You get no say in what I do about my family."

"All right."

"And I get one honest answer from you every day. One question. You can't lie, and you can't say 'later.'"

Her mouth worked.

"That's fair."

"Today's question, then." I looked at her. "Did you ever like me?"

She was quiet so long that the car behind us honked.

"Not at first," she said. "I thought you were a drifter who had married up. I told Joanna so at your wedding. Then I watched how you held her coat."

She shifted gears.

"That's your answer. It's not the one you wanted."

"It's the one I asked for."

Hank was at his sink when we came in, scrubbing a pot.
