Chapter 17: The Sting
My mother had driven me to Sewickley and waited at the end of the drive.
I called Nolan from her passenger seat, with my mother's hand over mine on the phone.
"It's me," I said. "He fired me. In the lobby, in front of everyone."
"I heard." Nolan sounded delighted. "A shame."
"I want to talk to my father. And to you."
"Why?"
"Because it worked, and I want to know what I'm in the middle of."
He was quiet for a few seconds, and I made my voice crack on purpose.
I'd had plenty of real cracks to borrow from.
"The club," he said. "Four o'clock. Dress like a Ruddock."
My mother drove, because my hands weren't good for it.
In the car, she took my pen out of her purse.
It was the second one.
Burke still had the first.
"Where did you get that?"
"Nolan's briefcase on Thursday, while he was admiring your father's carving." She looked at the road. "He carries four."
