Chapter 22: The Dock
"The plant," I said.
Burke already had the car door open.
We were on the hotel's loading ramp, and the charcoal coat had vanished into the garage.
"Why the plant?"
"Because it's where Nolan keeps everything he can't put in his office.
He told my father once.
He said Ruddock Metals still had the best locks in the county."
"How far?"
"Forty minutes if you drive like a father."
"I'm not driving like a father," Burke said.
Behind us, six old men were coming down the ramp from the ballroom in their good ties, the foreman with the bad knee in front.
"We're coming," the foreman said.
"It's not your fight."
"It's our plant," he said. "It's our pension.
Where's he going?"
I told him.
He nodded once, and pointed at a flatbed truck parked on the street with a ladder strapped to the side.
"We know the back road," he said.
The Ruddock Metals yard sat on the river south of the city, behind a chain-link fence with a rusted padlock that had been cut.
