On the thirty-ninth night, only one seam was left in the sky.
It was the north crack, the last wide one, running over the ridge to the cave.
It ended in a small fork.
Qin Heyan stood on the pavilion's porch and looked at it for a long time.
Everything else was whole.
The dusk-gold was smooth from the pines to the horizon, and the lake lay still and clear.
Behind him in the hall, the great lamp burned.
He had counted at dawn, as he did every dawn.
Forty-seven wicks were dark, and the thirty-ninth morning called for thirty-eight.
Nine too many.
Fifty-three small flames were left, and they leaned and guttered in a draft.
"You're counting again," Lu Baichuan said from the doorway.
"I am not."
"You are. Your lips move."
Lu came out onto the porch and leaned his shoulder against Qin's.
He had grown thinner in the last weeks, and his color was bad.
