Chapter 11: The Wedding
Four hundred people came to the Kingsford garden to watch me marry a girl I had known for five days.
White chairs ran in long rows across the lawn, and the river shone behind the arch.
My father stood beside me in a rented suit and kept pulling at his cuffs.
"Breathe, Dad," I said.
"I'm trying," he said. "Your mother would have cried."
"I know."
The music began, and the garden went quiet.
Edmund Kingsford walked his granddaughter down the aisle on his cane and her arm.
She wore an ivory gown with long sleeves and a plain veil, and the gold bracelet lay on her wrist where I had fastened it.
She walked down the long aisle with her chin up and did not once miss a step.
Four hundred people stood, and every one of them looked at her.
I looked for only one person.
In the front row on the groom's side, Trent sat in a gray suit with his hands on his knees.
Tiffany sat beside him with a rigid back.
Neither of them looked at the other.
Edmund placed his granddaughter's hand in mine.
His own hand shook.
"Take care of her," he said, very low. "Or I will take you apart."
"Yes, sir."
The officiant began to speak, and I did not hear any of it.
Cosima's fingers were warm in mine now.
"Perry Fairchild," the officiant said at last. "Say what you promise."
I had written nothing down.
I turned toward her, and I said it plainly.
"I'm not going to say I loved you before today," I said. "I didn't know you. But you ate three of my father's pancakes, and you let me read you a book about pirates."
