Chapter 13: The Night Before
On Friday night I found my husband in his study, standing at the window with a sheet of paper in his hand.
He had written the speech out four times.
He kept folding it into smaller squares.
"I'll start with Joelle," he said, without turning around. "Then my mother. Then the rest."
"I'll say what I did and what I didn't. I'll say Bridget's name."
"You don't need a paper."
"I need something to hold."
I crossed the room and took it out of his hand.
I set it on his father's bare desk.
"Hold me instead," I said.
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he put his arms around me.
He didn't kiss me, or lift me, or pull my clothes.
He just held on, his chin on top of my head and his breath coming slow.
I felt something I'd waited fourteen months to feel.
It was not heat.
It was being the place he came to rest.
"I texted Joelle," I said into his shirt. "I told her where and when. She hasn't answered."
"She won't come."
"She might."
"If she doesn't?"
"Then we say it to two hundred people and she reads it in the morning." I leaned back to see his face.
"That's still better than the lie."
