Chapter 14: The Dinner
The Garrison Grand ballroom had been set for two hundred and ten.
White roses stood on every table and a string quartet played near the stage.
Over the head table hung a banner in gold script that read HAPPY 58TH, ELEANOR.
Heath and I came in at seven, hand in hand.
Every head turned, and after a moment every head turned back, because Eleanor was glaring.
She sat at the center of the long table in a dark blue gown, with Bridget on her right in white and Eugene Depew on her left.
Eugene had a fresh haircut and no toothpick.
He raised a glass to us across the room and smiled.
"Sit down, Heath," Eleanor said when we reached the table. Her voice was low and cold. "And be pleasant."
"I'll sit after I've spoken, Mother."
"You will not speak."
"I will."
She held his eyes.
I thought for a second she would call the security men by the doors.
Her hand tightened on her napkin instead.
Whatever she was thinking, she didn't say it.
We took our seats.
Dinner passed in a haze.
I didn't taste the salmon.
Under the tablecloth, Heath's hand held mine so tightly my fingers went numb.
At eight-thirty the waiters wheeled out a three-tiered cake.
