Chapter 13: Songwriters' Night
"Good," I said.
Hudson turned his head.
"Good?"
"He goes first," I said. "Nobody remembers the song before the better one."
On the drop cloth, Emmylou mumbled, "Burn him," and didn't wake up.
I had four days.
I spent every morning before my shift at Hartsell Music, at the upright piano with the broken G.
Wynona walked past the door twelve times and never once came in.
"Don't you want to hear it?" I called on the third morning.
"I'm a judge," she called back. "I hear it when everybody hears it. Not one note sooner."
"That's very ethical."
"It's very irritating. Play louder so I can't help it."
I played softer.
She slammed a drawer.
On May 2 the recital hall was full by seven.
Mr. Rayburn's name was over the door in brass letters, because he'd paid for the door.
He sat in the front row on the aisle, silver hair combed back, one knee crossed over the other.
The four judges sat at a long table in the center aisle with scorecards and little lamps.
