Chapter 14: Out Loud

Every head in the hall turned to the booth.

Phones went up after the heads.

Hudson took his headphones off his neck and stood up in the light of the board, where everybody could see him.

He didn't say a word.

He didn't have to.

He looked caught.

I still had the Gibson in one hand.

I took the stage mic off its stand with the other.

"I'm not sleeping with anybody," I said. "But thanks for thinking about it, Breckin. You always did need ideas from me."

A few people laughed.

Not enough.

The judges' lamps clicked off one by one.

Breckin handed the emcee back his mic with a little bow and walked off through the side door.

Mr. Rayburn was already gone from the front row.

By midnight the clip was everywhere.

Somebody had cut it so Breckin's line landed right on Hudson standing up in the booth.

They'd slowed it down.

They'd put sad piano under it.

JUDGE'S GRANDSON, the captions said.

Emmylou read me the comments in the kitchen, a different voice for each one.
