"Since last spring," I said.
"The week after the Ryman."
"Hudson. That's a year."
"I'm aware it's a year." He still had his hand on the latch. "I kept waiting for the right time."
"And?"
"And there kept being a better one coming. The recital. Christmas. The nomination." He opened his eyes. "I'm a planner. It's a curse."
The rain drummed on the canopy over us.
I moved his hand off the latch.
He let me.
The glove box fell open.
Napkins, an ice scraper, a pressure gauge, and a small box covered in faded blue cloth.
I didn't open the box.
I took the pad of sticky notes off the dashboard instead, and the pen clipped to it.
"What are you doing?" he said.
"Answering."
I wrote in block letters, neat.
YES.
I peeled it off and stuck it on the dashboard, right between MIC 3 LIES and ARTIST DRIVES TONIGHT.
Hudson stared at it.
