Chapter 13: The Cell
The deputy filled the office doorway with his thumbs hooked in his belt.
Dale stood just behind him, holding a sheet of paper.
"I opened the safe," the pastor said. "It's my church. I used my own key."
"Then you'll want to explain that to the board," Dale said gently.
"Arrest me, then."
"Nobody's arresting a pastor on Christmas week," the deputy said. "The complaint names Caleb."
He held up the paper.
It was signed by the board chair, and it said trespass and tampering with church property.
Dale had written it before he ever got in his truck.
"There is nothing in that safe but your own handwriting," I said.
"I haven't the faintest idea what you mean," Dale said, and smiled at the pastor.
The pastor pressed the yellow slips against his chest and said nothing.
My hands were already moving.
I had my phone up and shot every slip I could reach, front to back, before the deputy took one step.
