Chapter 13: The Guest in the Yellow Room
The taxi stopped at the iron gate at ten past three.
I had stood at the kitchen window since midnight, and I was down the front steps before Nunzio finished saying my name.
The gate was unlocked, as the note had asked.
Fabrizia shouldered it open, because she carried a bag in each hand.
She still wore the long blue dress from the feast, with a man's raincoat thrown over it.
A cut split her lower lip, and a thin line of blood had dried to her chin.
"I didn't have anywhere else," she said.
"You have here."
I took the heavier bag, and it clinked softly.
"Nine tiny sleepers," she said, before I could ask. "I bought them one at a time at the pharmacy, with twenties folded into squares."
"I wasn't leaving them for him."
Her laugh came out wet and broken.
Nunzio held the front door open, and as she passed he slid a mint into her raincoat pocket without a word.
Orazio waited at the foot of the stairs in his shirtsleeves.
Fabrizia stopped, and her hand went to her stomach.
