Chapter 17: The Shot

I did not feel the bullet because it did not reach me.

Something huge and green crossed the carpet in the half second before the sound.

It grunted and sat down hard on the floor.

Nunzio.

He looked up at me with mild surprise.

A dark stain began to spread through the side of his parka.

"Ah," he said. "That's a hole."

Ettore had a second to see what he had done.

It was all he got.

Orazio crossed the table in the time it takes to say it.

His hand closed over the pistol and the wrist behind it.

I heard the wrist bend.

Ettore shrieked and went down on his knees on the red carpet.

Orazio took the gun out of his fingers.

He could have broken the arm.

I saw him think about it.

He dropped the magazine into his palm and put both pieces on the table in front of the gray man.

"The table's business," he said, and his voice was a stranger's. "Not mine."

Then he was beside me, and I was on my knees beside Nunzio, and I didn't remember getting there.
