The Hall Elder's champion was a lean, quiet man, and Ye-han disliked him on sight.
The champion held his sword.
Four hundred sect masters sat round the white stone yard in the rain, under oiled umbrellas.
The Leader of the Martial Alliance stood in the middle with a plain sword and no armor.
He looked relaxed.
Ye-han knew better.
He had spent three nights with that man.
He'd learned that when Gyeong-wook stood very still and let his shoulders drop, it was because he was afraid.
Ye-han sat in the front row with his fan across his knees and his heart in his throat.
"Begin," said the Sealing Elder.
For the first thirty breaths nothing happened.
They circled, and the rain hissed on the stone.
Then the champion struck.
It was fast, a flicker, a silver line that opened Gyeong-wook's sleeve to the elbow.
A gasp ran round the yard.
Gyeong-wook did not step back.
He stepped in, and the champion cut again, and again Gyeong-wook turned it aside with a quiet scrape of steel.
He was not fast.
He was exact.
Every move he made landed a hand's width ahead of the champion's blade.
It was as if he had seen each cut before it was drawn.
Ye-han had never seen a man fight like that.
The champion's face changed.
He tried a feint, a high cut, a thrust to the ribs.
Gyeong-wook let each one go by and kept walking him back across the wet white stone.
Then, from the stands behind the Hall Elder, something small and bright left a hand.
Ye-han saw it.
