The gate opened because Dol-soe's men stood in the yard and called their names up to the lieutenant on the wall.
Ji-hwan's mother came down the stair as they rode in.
She did not run, because she had never run in her life.
She walked across the frozen yard in her gray dress with her hands out, and Ji-hwan slid off his horse and went into them.
She was smaller than he remembered, and she smelled of ginger and smoke.
"You are thin," she said into his hair.
"You were always thin.
"Your sisters are in the village, and they will not believe it."
Then she lifted her head and looked past his shoulder.
Dol-soe had dismounted and stood bareheaded, with the reins in his scarred hand.
Ji-hwan's mother looked at him for a long time.
"That is the man who took my husband," she said.
"Yes," Ji-hwan said.
"That is also the man who set a guard on my women's rooms the night the fortress fell.
"Three of his own soldiers who tried to come through that door were hanged for it before noon."
Ji-hwan stared at her.
"I wanted you to hear it from me," she said.
