Chapter 15: Price It

Carys's POV

I drove for forty minutes with no destination and ended up behind the bar.

The back door was propped open with a crate.

Felix was inside stacking chairs, still in the velvet jacket.

He had a bandage on one hand where a guitar string had snapped.

He looked up and saw my face, and he put the chair down.

"Sit," he said.

I sat at the bar and put my ledger on the counter.

I opened it to the page marked Caspian Draven.

Under the word Closed, I wrote a new heading in capital letters.

OWED BY CARYS.

Felix poured something amber into a glass and slid it across.

"You want to tell me what that says?"

"It says I owe my husband one billion dollars."

"You're keeping the billion. You told me in the second week."

"I'm going to wire it back."

"At four in the morning?"

"The bank has an online form."

"Carys."

"He remembered," I said. "He sat on the stairs and told me what I said, word for word."

"He thinks it's fine. He thinks he's the one who obeyed me."

"And?"

"And he nearly died on that road because I wanted a quiet week."

My voice cracked on the last word, and I was furious about it.

Felix did not say anything.

He pulled up a stool and sat at the corner of the bar with his elbows on his knees.

"I took the money in four minutes," I said.

"The banker said one billion had been deposited. Do you know what I felt?"

"Greed?"

"Relief."

I put my hand flat over the page.

"I was relieved he didn't remember me."

"If he didn't remember me, he'd never find out what I said."
