Chapter 9: Not for Sale

I woke up alone in the big bed with the sun in my eyes.

The sheet next to me was warm, and the pillow still smelled of cedar.

I sat up and listened.

Something in the kitchen was clattering.

I put on one of his shirts, because mine had not survived the night, and went down the stairs on bare feet.

Caspian stood at the stove in his trousers and a bandage, with his back to me and his tail hanging down the back of his legs.

The kitchen smelled of butter and berries.

On the table sat a plate stacked with pancakes, a bowl of blackberries and one small jar of honey.

"Good morning," he said, without turning around.

"You're cooking."

"I am attempting to."

He faced me, and I saw that he had flour on his jaw and shadows under his eyes.

"I do not know why I bought berries yesterday," he said. "I stood in the market and my hand went to them. I could not tell you the last time I ate one."

I looked at the bowl.

"I like berries."

"So I gather."

"I hate shellfish."

"There was a crate of oysters in the delivery." He gestured toward the garbage can with the spatula. "I found I could not bring myself to open it. I do not know why."

I sat down very carefully at the table.

My throat hurt.

"Eat," he said. "Please. It is not for sale."

"Everything is for sale."

"This is not. I made it myself, and it has no market price." He set a fork in front of me. "I checked."

I stared at him.

He had tried to defeat my rule, and he had done it with a pancake, and he had done it correctly.
