Chapter 5: Carlo's Fist

I went up to the main house at noon to get my pills from my old bedroom, and Ciro walked beside me with his hands in his pockets.

The courtyard was full of men.

Carlo's crew had been lifting weights by the garage, and they put the bars down when they saw us.

Carlo came across the gravel with his shirt over his shoulder and his knuckles already taped.

"You," he said to Ciro.

"Good morning," said Ciro.

"Get out of my father's house."

"I'm a guest of your father's house for six more days."

"You're a dead man in a stolen name." Carlo stopped an arm's length away. "I don't know what you did to my sister, but she's sick and she's not thinking."

"I'm thinking fine," I said.

Carlo didn't look at me.

He hit Ciro in the face.

It was a short, heavy punch, and it split Ciro's lip and turned his head to the side.

The crew went silent.

Every one of them knew the law, and every one of them had just watched Carlo Barsanti break it in his own courtyard.

Ciro touched his mouth and looked at the blood on his fingers.

He didn't raise his hands.

"That's one," he said. "By your father's law, you owe me for that."

"I owe you nothing."

"Then you've just told twelve men your word is cheap."

Carlo swung again.

I stepped between them.

I weighed a hundred and four pounds that week, and my brother's fist stopped an inch from my chin.
