Chapter 15: Don't Follow Me
Lucio came up behind me at the window.
He didn't touch me.
We watched the silver sedan turn the corner at the bottom of the Hill.
"She'll be at his table by tonight," he said.
"Let her."
"She knows things about this family, Rox."
"So do I."
Behind us forty relatives were pretending to eat cake.
I let the curtain fall.
"I'm going back to Las Vegas on Tuesday," I said.
He was quiet for a second.
"For the sign."
"For the sign. For Bunny. For me."
"All right."
"And you're not coming."
His jaw moved under the beard.
"I don't follow you anymore," I said. "Not to the pawnshop, not to the bus, not to the desert. You don't sit outside my window in a black car. You don't send a man. If I want you, I'll say so."
"And if you don't?"
"Then you'll never know where I am. Isn't that what you sell?"
He took it.
I watched him take it.
"Go," he said. "I won't follow."
He didn't.
I flew back on the ninth of June.
Bunny was at the curb in the red truck with the hula girl on the dash, honking before I'd cleared the doors.
She didn't ask what happened.
She drove the whole way with one hand and held my wrist on the seat with the other.
That night on her porch, over a beer, I told her my name.
"Roxie Kinnard," I said. "From Atwells Avenue. My father made neon."
She said it back twice to get the feel of it.
"Roxie. That's a good name. That's a showgirl name."
"It's my father's."
"Even better."
Then I told her the rest.
The Ferryman, and the texts, and the hospital in Boston.
I left out one thing.
Whose hands were on the Ferryman's phone wasn't mine to give away.
She smoked two cigarettes and didn't interrupt once.
At the end she stubbed the second one out very carefully in a coffee can.
"You know who he is," she said. "The Ferryman."
"I can't tell you."
"Kid. Roxie. Who would I tell? The coyotes?"
