Chapter 24: The Eighth
On the morning of my thirteenth birthday, I woke up and nobody had decided anything for me.
I lay in the spare room at Aunt Dot's and looked at the ceiling.
Then I went down to the kitchen in my socks, and she was standing at the stove.
"What do you want for breakfast?" she asked, without turning around.
"Eggs," I said. "Scrambled. With the cheese."
"Good choice."
"I know."
She smiled into the pan.
It was the first week of October, and the barn doors were open to a cold bright sky.
Polly arrived at ten, with her hair still wet from practice and a present wrapped in the swim schedule.
It was a pencil case, sewn badly, with a lopsided heron on the zipper in blue marker.
"I made it myself," she said. "Don't say it's rough."
"It's rough."
"I said don't."
"It's the best thing anyone ever made me," I said, and she hit me on the arm, and went red.
At eleven-fifty-eight I heard the engine.
I stood in the yard with Aunt Dot and Polly and watched the truck come down Quarry Road, slow and careful, with something long and flat strapped into the bed.
"Gate," Aunt Dot said.
I looked up, and Dylan was already there.
He had gone out of the passenger side of the truck before it stopped, in his running shoes, and he sprinted the last stretch of the lane to the gate, and flung it open.
He was out of breath and grinning.
"Don't worry, it's the real door," he said. "Dad took it off the hinges himself. He used a screwdriver. He said a word."
"I said a very mild word," my father said, climbing out.
