Chapter 21: The Plea
Elliot's POV
I crossed the street in the rain and rapped on the window of the grey car.
It came down halfway.
Lorna sat behind the wheel with her hands at ten and two and her eyes on the building.
"I wasn't watching," she said. "I mean I was. I didn't know how to come up."
"What do you want?"
She passed a paper through the gap.
It was a court notice with the prosecutor's name on it.
"Russ's hearing is Monday. He's pleading. The prosecutor wants us both in the room, and Sam's statement will be read." She wet her lips. "I'm going to testify. Against him. And against me."
"Why tell me at night, in the rain?"
"Because I didn't want you to hear it from anyone else."
I looked at her for a moment.
Then I took the paper and went back to my father's car, where my son was breathing against the window.
Monday the courtroom was full.
Neighbours from my building sat in a row, and a reporter I recognized from the local news held a pad on her knee.
My mother sat on my left with her handbag in her lap.
Lorna's mother sat on my mother's other side, and they were not speaking, but their shoulders touched.
Hannah sat on my right.
She had come without being asked, in a dark blue dress I hadn't seen.
In the first minute she took my hand and put it on her knee, where the people behind us could see.
I did not take it back.
Russ came in through the side door in a county jumpsuit.
His glasses were gone.
Without them his round face had no kindness left in it.
