Chapter 5: Pressure

The first person to reach me was Hannah.

She came down the corridor at a run and dropped to her knees in the blood without looking at it.

"Mr. Brandow. Stay with me. Look at me."

I tried to answer, and what came out was wet.

She put both hands flat on my stomach and leaned her whole weight into them.

It hurt so much that the light in the ceiling went white.

"Code in the east hall!" she shouted. "I need a gurney and two units, now!"

The man in the wheelchair was pressed against the wall.

The young mother had pulled her toddler's face into her shoulder.

Lorna stood where she had stopped, with her empty hands still raised and the divorce pages scattered at her feet.

"I didn't," she said. "I only pushed. I barely touched him."

Nobody answered her.

"Ma'am, step back," a nurse said.

"He's my husband."

"Then step back so we can keep him alive."

Hannah's face was a foot above mine.

Her ponytail had come loose and there was a smear of red on her freckled cheek.

"Your pressure is dropping," she told me, steady and flat. "That's the ulcer. It's bleeding fast. We're taking you to surgery in a minute, and I'm not leaving."

I wanted to tell her about the boy.
