Chapter 6: Wake

The first thing I heard was a slow, steady beeping.

The second was my mother saying, "Look at him. He's frowning. He always frowns before he wakes up."

I opened my eyes on a white ceiling and a plastic tube taped to my arm.

My mother's face came into focus, and she was crying and furious at the same time.

"Don't talk," she said. "Don't you dare talk. They took it out. The whole thing, in one go. You're going to be fine."

My father stood at the foot of the bed with his coat still on.

He didn't say anything.

He rubbed the back of his head, which he did when he was upset, and his gray hair stood up behind his hand.

"How long?" I whispered.

"You were in surgery most of the night. It's noon." She wiped her face with her sleeve. "A nurse called me on your phone. She was gentle with me. She said you were going into the operating room, and I got on a plane before she hung up."

"Hannah."

"That's the one. She's been checking on you all night. I'm giving her a cake when we go home."

I tried to laugh, and my stomach reminded me not to.

"They're sending the tissue to a lab," my mother said. "We'll know in a week what it was. Whatever it is, it's out of you."

The beeping went on.
