Chapter 25: The Harvest Challenge
The Harvest Moot was the first feast the Keep had thrown since the Council stripped Ewan of his rank, and four hundred wolves had come to show they didn't care.
Long tables ran the length of the yard under strings of lanterns.
The Harvest Moon sat fat and orange over the east wall, and the whole valley smelled of apples and woodsmoke.
I was carrying a tray of Brigid's pies when the gate guard shouted that cars were coming.
Three black cars rolled through the gate and stopped in a line.
There was a Council pin on the hood of the first one.
The yard went quiet, one table at a time.
A tall man got out of the back seat in a grey wool coat, with auburn hair gone silver at the sides and a face lined from smiling.
A young woman climbed out after him. She was thin, with dark red hair and a man's coat hanging off her shoulders.
She took hold of his sleeve at once and did not let go.
"Hamish Gault," Brigid said at my elbow. "Alpha of Greywater. Senior member of the Nine since July."
"And the girl?"
"His daughter, Isla. She goes where he goes."
"He looks nice," I said.
"They do," said Brigid.
He did not walk like a man come to start a fight.
He went down the line of tables shaking hands.
He touched a child's hair. He asked an old man about his hip, and he knew the name of the old man's dog.
His voice was soft, so people leaned in to hear it.
By the time he reached the head table, half the Keep was smiling back at him.
Ewan stood to meet him. He had not smiled once.
"Senior Member."
"Hamish, please. I've wanted to thank you for the Keep's hospitality for a long time." He took Ewan's hand in both of his. "And to tell you how sorry I am about the vote that stripped you. I argued against it."
