Chapter 33: The Truck Behind the Feed Store

Fourteen days before the Hunter's Moon, Ewan went down in the training ring for the second time that morning.

The shaved-headed wolf stood over him in his grey fur, panting, ears flat.

He did not look pleased.

"Again," Ewan said, from the dirt.

"Alpha, you're bleeding."

"Again."

I sat on the rail with my arms wrapped around my knees and counted the bruises on his ribs.

I had seen him fight the hunter in sleet with a crossbow bolt in his shoulder.

He had never looked slow.

He looked slow now, and he knew it, and he got up anyway.

I knew what he was fighting, and it was not the wolf in the dirt.

It was Isla Gault's hand flat on that window, and a pulse of thirty-eight, and Daphne's one note since the supper.

It had said only: Still in. Wait for the moon.

I had waited for six days, and I hated every one of them.

"Miss Corvane," a guard called from the gate. "There's a man here asking for you."

"Which man?"

"He says he's your father."

Ewan stopped in the middle of the ring.

I got down off the rail.

"Don't let him in," I said.

"He's not asking to come in. He's standing on the road with his hat off."

I walked down to the gate with the shaved-headed wolf behind me, and Ewan behind him, still in his torn shirt.

My father was standing in the middle of the track with his boots together.

I almost didn't know him.

He had lost thirty pounds. His beard was grey and ragged, his flannel shirt was stained at the cuffs, and he held his hat against his chest with both hands.
