Chapter 37: What You Asked For
"You asked," I said.
"I asked."
"Say the rest. Say you wanted it."
Daphne's chin came up, and her face was grey to the lips.
"I wanted it," she said. "Not for Mom, and not for you. For me."
The hall was so quiet I could hear the fire.
"I ate a bowl of soup with that girl," she said. "She couldn't hold the spoon without both hands. I sat across the table from her for three days, and I thought, I know exactly how cold that is."
"So you took it on."
"So I did the one thing I'd never done. I asked what it cost, and then I paid it."
I wanted to scream at her.
I wanted to say she was eighteen and a fool and my sister.
I could not make myself say that the choice was not hers.
My mother had made every choice for me for eighteen years.
I looked at Daphne's neck, and I said nothing at all.
"The knot is real," the Elder said from the doorway, to the whole Greywater hall. "It was given freely, before a witness, and Moot law calls that lawful. I cannot undo it. Neither can anyone under this roof except the one it feeds from."
"Then Hamish Gault holds two wells," I said.
"He does."
"And Isla still wears hers."
"She does."
Hamish put his hand on his heart.
"I would never have asked it of the girl," he said. "I want that known."
On the couch behind him, a breath caught.
Isla's eyes were open.
She lay quite still and looked at the ceiling, and then she turned her head and saw Daphne's neck.
