I didn't let him in.
I stepped out onto the stoop in my socks and pulled the door shut behind me.
"You're drunk," I said.
"I had one glass. I'm here to help."
Jared held up the bottle.
The snow came down in slow flakes through the streetlight, and his breath smoked.
"Whit told me what she did today," he said. "She sent your folder to the managing director and then she went home and laughed."
"She went to your place?"
"She came to my place. She has worn my ring since June and she laughed at the thing that nearly ended you."
His voice cracked, and I realized he wanted me to feel sorry for him.
"I'm listening," I said.
"I can fix it."
"Fix what?"
"All of it. I know her passwords. She keeps everything on one phone." He leaned closer. "Give me forty minutes and every message is gone, every post, every copy she's saved."
"Then I call your clients, and I tell your agency it was a misunderstanding."
"And Anson?"
"Anson comes out clean."
"What's the price?"
He smiled, wide and relieved, because I'd asked.
