Chapter 22: Sunday at Marta's

It was the same size as the dining room at Carlo's house.
It had a white cloth and a single candle.
A bowl of Marta's sauce sat in the middle and smelled of spring.

"My father."
She set the platter down and squeezed my shoulder.
"Then we leave it empty," she said. "And we pass him the bread first."
We sat.
The old captain took the seat at my right and tucked his napkin into his collar.
Santino sat on my left.
Across from us, a young widow from Marta's block sat down with her two sleepy boys.
Marta had invited half the street.
