Chapter 18: The Tribunal
They held the tribunal at noon, in the open court, because the old law said a crime at the Stone must be judged beside it.
Nine packs stood in the ring again.
Nobody had slept, and nobody had left.
The old she-wolf sat in a chair in front of the Stone with her cane across her knees, and eight Alphas sat in a row beside her.
The ninth chair, Dalton's, stood empty.
He sat on the cobbles at the edge of the court with his burned hand in a bandage, and nobody looked at him.
Hamish sat in the row with his jaw set, and his eyes did not leave Rosalind.
She stood with her right hand wrapped in white gauze, and Agnes stood beside her, rubbing her wrists.
They brought Jessamy out of the hall between two Ironridge guards.
She had washed her face and braided her hair.
She wore the pale green gown from the Mating Ball, and she had put on the shy, hurt look that had worked so well on Rosalind in the ballroom.
"Jessamy Ashling," the old she-wolf said. "You are charged with the taking of a Moon-line wife's blood at the Stone, for the purpose of stealing her bond."
Jessamy looked around the ring with huge eyes.
"I was frightened," she said. "I have been alone in this pack for six weeks. Everyone hated me from the first day."
Nobody answered her.
"The healer will speak," the old she-wolf said.
Agnes told it plainly, and she did not look at Jessamy once.
She said she had sat at the foot of the Stone for a whole night, and watched Jessamy sharpen the blade.
