Chapter 21: The Last Word
Rosalind put her hair up with two pins and buttoned her dress wrong, then fixed it.
She left Hamish in the office, standing among the fallen papers with the lamp righted in his hand.
"Do you want me there?" he asked.
"No."
"All right."
He said it as simply as that, and she loved him a little for it.
She went out through the front doors with the circlet back on her head.
The iron gate stood open a hand's width.
Dalton waited on the far side of it, in the road, where the guards had told him to wait.
He had a canvas pack on his back and a brown paper bag in his good hand.
His right hand was wrapped to the wrist in gray gauze, and the fingers inside it did not move.
"Thank you for coming out," he said.
"What do you want, Dalton?"
"I'm leaving."
She waited.
"Edmund offered me a room in the clinic wing." He gave a short, flat laugh. "A room. As if I could lie in the house and listen to them call you Alpha through the walls. I told him no. I'm going tonight."
"Where?"
"North. I haven't decided."
He held out the paper bag.
She took it, and it clinked.
Inside were the Alpha's ring, a heavy silver band with the pack's crest, the key to the top-floor wing, and a small gold ring she had not seen in twenty years.
It was the wedding band she had given him in a field behind her mother's house, when she was nineteen and he was twenty-one, a hammered thing that had cost her three weeks of wages.
