Chapter 24: The Second Toast
Nolan's POV
I climbed the three steps to the stage with the ring on my finger and a fresh glass in my hand.
Someone had righted the podium.
The microphone stand lay where it had fallen, and I picked it up and set it straight.
The lilies were still scattered across the marble.
Nobody in the hall could say whose hand had spilled them.
Two hundred faces turned toward me, curious and kind.
Camille stood at the foot of the steps, in her green dress, with her eyes on mine.
She was looking at me first.
She had not looked away once since I stood up.
Alana was beside her, with her headset around her neck and a grin she could not hold in.
The panel in my eye read C 100.
D 100.
It did not flicker.
It did not need anyone to be afraid, or sorry, or watching.
I tapped the microphone, and the hall quieted.
"Good evening," I said. "My name is Nolan Culligan. Some of you know me as the man who used to stand by the east doors."
A few people laughed.
"I was head of security here for three years. I'm not anymore. I resigned in front of this family's board, and I walked out of this hall without a word."
A hush came down over the tables.
"Everyone here knows that, so I'll skip it. I want to talk about the founder instead."
