Davis's POV

I quit Brent Garner's crew at six on Sunday morning, by text.

I wrote: I'm done. Send my last check to the yard.

He didn't answer.

One of the guys texted me within the hour.

He wrote: Heard what happened. I'm in if you're starting something.

I wrote back: Maybe. Not yet.

Then I put the phone in my pocket and finished hanging the last row of shelves in Elise's studio, because it was something to do with my hands.

She was asleep on the old velvet couch at the back of the showroom.

She had come in at one in the morning and said she couldn't go home to the empty house.

I had said, "Take the couch," and she had.

Now she lay with one arm under her cheek and a drop cloth pulled over her shoulders.

I had put it there myself at three, when the heat dropped.

I had stood there longer than I should have.

I have known Elise Garner for six years.

The first time I saw her, she was standing in the doorway of her old shop with a measuring tape around her neck and a box of pins in her hand, trying to fix a broken hinge with a butter knife.

I said, "Let me."

She said, "I can do it."

I said, "I know. Let me anyway."

She laughed.

That was the whole thing.

I had fixed everything in that shop for six years, and I had never told her why I kept finding reasons.

I had never sent a bill.

I kept her old shop key on my ring even after she got a new lock.

I told myself it was for emergencies.
