Chapter 12: The Nursery
Elise's POV
At two o'clock on Sunday, forty people stood in Lacey's living room holding glasses of champagne.
The house on Hollin Court smelled of lilies and fresh paint.
A photographer from the town paper knelt in the doorway to get the best angle.
The woman who ran the Lakeshore Children's Fund was there, and so were most of the donors from the gala.
Marilyn stood by the fireplace in her pearls with a tight face.
Brent stood against the far wall.
He had shaved and put on a suit, and he didn't look at me once.
Wanda was beside me, in her church hat, with her handbag held tight in both hands.
Davis was behind us, kneeling at an outlet by the bookshelf.
A long cable ran from his projector to the blank white wall above the sofa.
Nobody had asked what it was for.
They all thought I was nervous and brave.
Lacey glided in from the kitchen in a pale yellow dress.
She was smiling widely.
She came straight to me and took both my hands.
"You came," she said, warmly, loudly enough for the room. "I'm so proud of you."
"Hello, Lacey."
Her lips came close to my ear.
"Good girl," she whispered. "Now behave."
She pulled back and beamed at the guests.
"Thank you all for being here," she said. "A week ago, I bid on a few simple repairs. Brent gave me so much more. He rebuilt my back steps, my porch rail and my kitchen. And he finished the one thing I'd wished for, for so long."
A few people sighed already.
