Chapter 10: Dean's Hand

By morning the photo had two hundred thousand views.

It showed Miles's truck in the hospital parking structure, his hand in my hair, my fingers in his shirt.

Under it Brooke's friend had written: She's in the ER because of this woman. Pray for her.

"Leave it up," Miles said on the phone. "Let it run."

"People think I'm a monster."

"People think what they're told for about a week." His voice was tired and steady. "Then they get told something else."

"That's not very comforting."

"It's very comforting. I've done it before." A pause. "Where are you?"

"My father's ferry dock. I'm bringing him lunch."

"I'll come by at noon."

I hung up and tucked the phone in my back pocket.

My father's ferry dock sat at the end of a gravel road, with a crooked sign, a bait shop and a deckhand who sold coffee out of a thermos for two dollars.

Dad was in the little office with his feet on the desk.

I put the sandwiches on his blotter.

"You didn't have to come," he said. "I'm fine."

"I wanted to see you."

He studied me for a long moment over his glasses.

"You're different," he said. "Since last week."

"Am I?"

"You don't flinch anymore."

I didn't know what to say to that, so I kissed his bearded cheek and went out.

The deckhand was sweeping the bait shop step.
