Chapter 17: Before Dawn

Miles's POV

I had not told Leah about the six o'clock meeting.

I had driven to Dean's apartment before dawn.

She was bent over her laptop at the kitchen table, typing, and she only nodded when I said I was going out for coffee.

I had stood in his doorway with the investigator's video on my phone and said one sentence.

"Tell it yourself on the dock this morning, or she tells it for you."

He had said nothing for a long time.

Then he had got his jacket.

Now he stood on the landing in front of forty commuters with their phones out.

Brooke stood on the ferry's gangway above him, and I watched her work out that he was not on her side.

"Dean," she said again. "Tell them it's a lie. Tell them I'm having your baby."

The deck went silent.

Dean looked at her for a moment.

"Is it mine?" he said.

"Of course it's yours."

"We haven't been together since last spring, Brooke."

She flinched.

A man on the deck whistled low.

"I have something to say," Dean said, and he turned to face the crowd and the investigator.

His voice was steady, and I will say that for him.

"On Thursday night I picked up a woman from her apartment and drove her to Pier Nine."

He didn't look at her.

"I opened the gate with a fob that was issued to Leah Danvers."

"Dean!" Brooke screamed.
