She Catfished Him With My Face, So This Time He Is Mine novel · Chapter 8 of 24

Chapter 8: Her Boss Has a Phone

The owner's office was a closet with a desk in it, and she had two phones lined up on the blotter.

She was sixty-three and had run the restaurant for thirty years.

She did not offer me a chair.

"I've watched this video eleven times," she said, and tapped the first phone.

It was Brooke's post, with the prayer on top.

"And I got this at midnight." She tapped the second phone.

It was a clip from the yacht club, cut so that it began on my face at the stage and ended just before the spare phone rang.

Over it somebody had written: Unstable woman crashes friend's dinner.

It had nine thousand views.

"Somebody sent me an email too," she said. "Would you like to read it?"

She turned her laptop around.

It was from an address I didn't know. It said I had been taking food out of the walk-in for months and selling it, and that she should check the numbers.

The signature at the bottom was a first name only.

Brooke.

"Did you do that?" the owner said.

"No."

"Then you won't mind explaining the numbers."

I did not mind.

I had written the walk-in log myself every night for two years.

It was a clipboard on a nail by the door, filled in with pen.

The last sous chef had been sloppy, and I'd hated it.

"The log's in the kitchen," I said. "Every case in, every case out, with my initials. If one of them is wrong, I'll pay it."
