Chapter 15: Option Two

Tristan's POV

On Monday, in the HR office, Vivian opened her mouth to answer the question, and I said, "May we have until tomorrow?"

I said it before she could.

I felt her look at me, and I did not look back.

The HR partner closed her folder.

"Noon," she said. "Both of you, separately. And Ms. Stratton, please don't discuss this with Mr. Hayes tonight."

"We live together," Vivian said.

"That," said the HR partner, "is the problem."

Tuesday at ten, Dennis Tidwell was putting on the carpet of his office.

He didn't look up when I came in.

He lined up a ball, tapped it, and watched it roll straight past a plastic cup.

"Hayes."

"Dennis."

"Sit. I have a short game problem and now I have a you problem."

I sat.

He putted again, and the ball hit the cup and spun out.

"I'll make it simple," he said. "I have your declaration file. I have hers. Friday afternoon, she wrote that your relationship had ended. Monday morning, I get a photograph of her with her hands in your shirt."

"Lapels," I said.

"I'm sorry?"

"Her hands were on my lapels."

He turned around slowly and looked at me for a moment.

"You have two options," he said. "Option one. Stratton signed a statement under penalty that was false by dinner. That voids her promotion, and it's grounds for dismissal. I would hate it. I have liked her numbers since June."

"And option two?"

"Option two, you tell me the statement was true when she signed it, and everything since is your doing. You are the senior person. You hid a marriage from this company for two years, and you let a junior employee carry a declaration you knew you'd undo by dinner."
