Chapter 19: The Hearing
Ivy was waiting outside the HR conference room at nine fifty-five with a binder three inches thick.
Every tab had a label, in pink.
"Brightline," she read, running a finger down them. "Fenwick. Q2 forecast. Q3 forecast. Things Dennis said that I disagree with."
"Is that last one a tab?"
"It's a short tab."
Tristan stood beside me in the same gray suit he'd worn to our wedding at the courthouse.
He had looked at it in the closet that morning and said, "It's the only one I trust."
I had a clear zip bag in my hand with a yellow Post-it in it.
Ivy looked at the bag. "Is that evidence?"
"It's a document."
"It's wonderful," she said. "Bring it."
The conference room had a long table, a pitcher of water, and a window onto the parking garage where this had all started.
Dennis sat at the head of the table. The HR partner sat on his right, in a gray suit with no cardigan.
She did not look at me, and she did not look at Tristan's arm.
"We're here," Dennis said, "because the company has a policy, and two people may have broken it, and one person sent a tip. We'll do them in that order."
He turned to the two of us.
"Mr. Hayes. You first."
Tristan stood.
"I'd like to say I hid the marriage," he said. "I kept it quiet and I asked my wife to keep it quiet. The declaration she signed on Friday was honest, and the part that was not honest after was mine."
"Rule one," I said.
He stopped.
"You're not taking it by yourself," I said. "We agreed on Sunday, next to a bench."
Dennis looked at the HR partner. She wrote something down.
I stood up too.
"I'm Vivian Stratton," I said. "Senior manager. I'm married to my director."
