Chapter 25: The Night Before

I read the two names on the ticket list twice.

Joel stood beside me with a roll of tape for the floor markings.

"They bought them online," he said. "I can refuse entry."

"The best man has a seat too. He told me he would stand up."

"You don't owe any of them a microphone."

"I know. I want the team to play. That's the only promise I've made."

The best man had given Toni a cut of the video that showed Grayson's face, not mine.

She played the cut for me in the closed office.

I watched every second and approved what it showed.

Then she kept it ready in case Grayson tried to use the Cup microphone.

Toni rolled past us with her cast held against her chest.

"If those two cause trouble, I'll hit them with this," she said.

"You'll miss," Joel said.

"I'll make you hold still."

She kept going, shouting at a skater who had left a bag in the aisle.

Joel and I put fresh tape along the track boundary after practice.

I pressed the last strip down with my thumb.

The rink seats were empty, but a hundred folding chairs waited against the back wall.

By tomorrow afternoon, people would fill every one.

"You'll be busy with the halftime exhibition," I said.

Joel knelt and smoothed a loose corner of tape.

"Toni asked me to skate with the alumni. I told her I'd think about it."
