Chapter 7: Kneel

"You smell like her," Chris said to Matt.

"I smell like tomatoes," said Matt.

"You smell like her, and tomatoes, and a very bad idea."

"I'm standing right here," Matt said.

"You're always standing right there."

"Both of you," I said.

They stopped.

I shut the door and leaned on it.

My legs weren't working properly yet.

"You can't both be in my room," I said.

"I'm in my room," said Chris, "because you left the window open for the fox."

"I'm the fox," said Matt.

"I know who you are."

"I have a name."

"I know you do, I'm learning to hate it."

"Stop." My voice cracked.

Both of them swung toward me and the fight went out of them at once.

Chris was across the room before I had finished taking a breath.

"What happened?" he said.

"What did he do?"

"Nothing. Nothing like that."

"Chloe." Matt's face was tight.

"You're white as a sheet."

"I heard him on the phone." I put my hand on my chest.

"The board has my file by now."

"By Friday I'll be on a train home."

Chris's claws came out with a click.

"He's throwing you out?"

"I don't know."

"I'll tear that tower down," Chris said, very softly.

"I'll rip off the clock hands and shove them..."

"No."

"I'll help," Matt said grimly.

"I can get into any vent in this building."

"No!"

I raised my voice, and they went still again.

It struck me that I was the only thing in the world that could do that to them.

I was too tired, and too scared, and too happy it was true.

"Nobody is going to shove anything anywhere," I said.

"If you two are going to help me, you're going to do exactly what I say."

"Anything," Chris said at once.

"Anything," said Matt, a beat behind.

"Then take your shirts off."

They looked at each other.

It was the first time they had agreed on anything.

Two shirts came off at once.

Chris was a wall of hard muscle, dark with scars, silver hair across his chest.
