Chapter 22: Not Her Judge
The board room was on the top floor of the administration building, and it had a view of the whole parade field.
I saw it as I came in.
The grass was empty, with the flagpoles standing bare in the late sun.
Five trustees sat on one side of a long table, including the one in the green blazer.
Sabina sat alone on the other side, with Albert in a chair against the wall behind her.
She turned when the door opened.
Her whole face changed, and she shook her head very slightly.
"I asked you not to come," she said.
"I know," I said. "Albert said I should decide."
"There's no reason."
"I have a reason."
The trustee in the green blazer tapped his pen.
"Miss Wrenfield, this is a closed hearing on Miss Pelham's standing. You are not a party."
"I'm the person she did it to," I said. "I'd like five minutes. Then I'll leave."
The chair of the board looked down the table, and the others nodded one by one.
Lottie slipped in behind me and took the seat by the door, and nobody objected, because nobody knew how.
I stood at the end of the table.
I had written nothing down.
"I'm not here to ask you to be kind to her," I said. "She isn't asking for that, and I'm not sure I'd give it."
Sabina stared at her hands.
"I want to tell you what the week was like. You've seen the video and read the letter. You haven't seen what it did."
Nobody interrupted.
"For four days I couldn't say a sentence out loud, because every one of them could be taken and used. I ate alone. I stopped talking to myself, which I've done since I was a kid. I started to feel like what she said I was."
