Chapter 7: Gran's Tin
The silver SUV stopped ten feet from the chief instructor, and both front doors opened at once.
The man who got out was broad and gray-haired, in a good suit with the tie already pulled loose.
He crossed the grass at a fast walk and went straight to Sabina.
"Bina," he said. "Baby, what is this? They told me on the phone you were hurt."
"Daddy," Sabina said, and she held up her arms.
He crouched and took her hands, and then he looked at her face.
Then he looked at the phone in the chief instructor's grip, and the bag in the drill instructor's hand, and the four hundred silent students behind them.
He stood up slowly.
"What did she do?" he asked.
"Mr. Pelham," the chief instructor said, "I think you should read this yourself."
I stood where I was, a few feet away, with Lottie's shoulder against mine.
I watched Albert Pelham scroll through the cards on his daughter's phone, one by one, with his mouth going tighter.
He stopped at the one where I was crying for Gran.
"My God," he said quietly.
He handed the phone back to the chief instructor quickly.
Then he turned and found me in the crowd.
I had expected anger, or an excuse.
He walked over, and he stopped in front of me, and his eyes were wet.
"You're Abby," he said. "I'm so sorry. That was my daughter's doing, and I'm ashamed of it."
"Thank you," I said. My voice came out smaller than I'd planned.
"Whatever the school wants me to do for you, I'll do it. Whatever you need."
